Monkey Picked Oolong Tea
One of the most frequent questions customers ask me is, “What is your favorite tea?” This is a difficult question to answer, especially since we sell over 200 loose teas from all over the world. Where do I begin? Well, I think about the teas that I always go back to and love drinking over and over. But, I don’t want my most favorite tea to be something I drink everyday, since it wouldn’t be special anymore. So, I think about my favorite category of tea: Oolong teas. I love oolong teas because they have characteristics of green teas, black teas and sometimes even white teas. They are beautifully made teas that can be rolled or twisted and almost always have a hint of sweetness to them, especially on the finish, something I love. And, you can re-steep oolong teas many times, enjoying the flavor over and over and experiencing nuances in taste each infusion. So you ask, “What is your favorite Oolong tea?” I can recommend every single one of our oolong teas, but my favorite is the Monkey Picked Oolong Tea. To me, this tea is a quintessential oolong. It comes from Fujian, China and is a Tie Kwan Yin style oolong, which means Iron Goddess of Mercy. It has green notes, floral notes, sweet notes, and a richness that lingers.
Another thing I love about the Monkey Picked Oolong Tea is that it helps give me a focused energy. If I need to really focus on a project or have extra creative energy, I’ll drink this tea throughout the time and feel great!
So what’s with the name, “Monkey Picked Oolong Tea?” The legend is that the Buddhist monks in China would train monkeys to pick the very best tea leaves available. So the agile monkeys with their discerning taste would go and find the most prized leaves on waterfall cliffs and crags. Now, a Chinese tea shop owner’s top shelf tea is his “Monkey Picked.”
